Three times the Scripture sounds this word, and each time it lays a different harvest before the one who hears.

When the first disciples followed Jesus along the Jordan and asked where he was staying, the Lord turned and said, "Come and see." They went, and they abode with him, and they saw the fruits of the Kingdom unfold across three years of ministry. The blind given sight, the lame walking, the dead raised, bread multiplied on a hillside, water made wine at a wedding, and at the end an empty tomb. When Philip ran to Nathanael with the same three words, Nathanael came and confessed him the Son of God, and was promised he would see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. This is the harvest of those who answer the Lord's invitation.

In the Revelation of Saint John, the four living creatures around the throne cry out the same word as each of the first four seals is broken, and a horseman rides forth at the summons. Conquest, war, famine, and death. These are the fruits the world ripens for itself when it will not come to Christ. The crown that turns to tyranny, the sword that devours its own, the scales that weigh a day's wage against a loaf of bread, and the pale rider who collects what remains. The same three words that called fishermen from their nets summon the riders from the seals, and the difference is only in who answers and what they have sown.

The Orthodox have always known this. When the envoys of Prince Vladimir stood in Hagia Sophia and knew not whether they were in heaven or on earth, an entire people came and saw, and the harvest was a thousand years of saints. We do not argue men into the faith. We show them the two tables that lie open before every soul, the one prepared by the Lord in the midst of his enemies, and the one the world prepares for itself.

Come and see. Both harvests are real. Only one of them feeds the soul.
