Go Forth Hand of Christ T-Shirt
The hand of Christ descends from the cloud, two fingers raised, the ring finger bent to touch the thumb. This is no arbitrary gesture. The Orthodox iconographer shapes the fingers to spell the name of the Lord himself, IC XC, the Greek abbreviation of Iesous Christos. The index finger forms the iota, the curved middle finger the sigma, the crossed thumb and ring finger the chi, the bent little finger the second sigma. The blessing is the Name made visible.
When the priest blesses the faithful, when the bishop signs the people, when Christ himself reaches out of the gold of an icon, the same hand and the same Name are at work. The gesture is older than any of us, given by the Lord and kept by his Church across every century. To receive it is to be marked by the One who spoke the world into being and who blesses still from the right hand of the Father.
A small reminder, worn over the heart, that the Lord's hand is never far.
